Daily News Summary from Chrysler Group May 2, 2011

The Daily News Summary is a digest of significant news about Chrysler Group LLC from print, electronic and online media. It is produced by the Chrysler Communications News Resource Team. Today's summary includes these reports: Chrysler returns to profit Chrysler turns first profit since bankruptcy Car-chase flick 'Fast Five' opens Compass points way to some good, dirty fun Chrysler 200 is a contender, but not a champ
Chrysler returns to profit, Wall Street Journal, May 2
o Chrysler Group reported a small net profit for the first quarter as a result of rising vehicle sales, the Wall Street Journal reported. The auto maker said it generated $116 million in net income, compared with a loss of $197 million in the first quarter of 2010, the Journal said. Revenue rose 35% to $13.1 billion, as global sales of new cars and trucks increased 18% to 394,000 vehicles, the article said. "Chrysler Group's improved sales and financial performance in the first quarter show that our rejuvenated product lineup is gaining momentum in the marketplace and resonating with customers," Sergio Marchionne, who serves as chief executive of both Chrysler and Fiat, said Monday, the Journal reported.
Chrysler turns first profit since bankruptcy, New York Times, May 2
o Chrysler has turned its first profit since leaving bankruptcy two years ago, the New York Times said. Several trends put Chrysler Group LLC back in the black - its sales rose 18 percent worldwide in the first three months of the year as the economy improved and buyers responded to a fresh lineup of new cars and trucks, the Times said. Chrysler's new vehicles caught buyers' eyes in the latest quarter, the article said. U.S. sales of the revamped Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV jumped 64 percent, while sales of the Chrysler 200 sedan more than quadrupled over those of its predecessor, the Times said. Chrysler said buyers were willing to pay more for its cars and trucks; Edmunds.com estimates the company lowered incentive spending by nearly $1,000 per vehicle in the quarter, the article said. Revenues rose 35 percent, the Times said.
Car-chase flick 'Fast Five' opens, Wall Street Journal, April 29
o If you are a motor-head moviegoer still seeking satisfaction from a car-chase film, "Fast Five," should do the trick, the Wall Street Journal said. The fifth film in the "Fast &
Furious" series that began in 2001 brings car maker Chrysler Group LLC into the mix, the Journal said. The company put together a highly orchestrated series of product placements focusing on its 2011 Dodge Charger, the article said. Once on screen, the menacing-looking Dodge cars that many people are accustomed to seeing as police cruisers fit pretty seamlessly into the plot, the Journal said.
Compass points way to some good, dirty fun, Montreal Gazette, May 2
o Although it's one of the smaller Jeeps, the Compass shows a big ability to handle the muck, the Montreal Gazette said. The new styling is a big step toward acceptance into the Jeep clan, the paper said. The paper's auto writer "pushed the Compass pretty hard on dry gravel roads, axle-deep muddy ruts and huge puddles of water and the Compass handled it all," the article said. Besides that, it was a whole lot of dirty fun, the review said.
Chrysler 200 is a contender, but not a champ, Minneapolis Star Tribune, April 29
o The Chrysler 200, a thoroughly reworked update of the Sebring, gives the company a viable, albeit still-compromised competitor for the segment, the Minneapolis Star Tribune said. The refreshed look is simpler and cleaner, the article said. Other highlights to the interior include wonderfully comfortable and supportive seats and great noise isolation from the road, the review said. The 200's cabin has a greater attention to detail, with better materials and a higher level of fit and finish than the Sebring, the article said. Power from the Pentastar engine is smooth and linear; it has an assertive but refined voice to it, the review said. The ride quality of the 200 is also much improved, the paper said. Chrysler made a point of updating the suspension and steering, and it shows, the review said. Perhaps the best thing this Chrysler has going for it is its overall value a similarly equipped Honda Accord or Toyota Camry would run at least $4,000 more, the article said.

The first minivan, improved, makes its return, Philadelphia Inquirer, April 27
o The 2011 Dodge Caravan is the minivan that started it all, improved for 2011, the Philadelphia Inquirer said. Lots of features, attractively packaged, but there's a nagging quality issue, the article said. Chrysler expected to erase its debt to government, New York Times, April 28
o Chrysler Group will announce a milestone in its comeback effort, declaring its intention to repay its $7.5 billion in high-interest loans -- $5.8 billion to the United States government and $1.7 billion to Canada's -- as soon as next month by selling new bonds to investors, the New York Times said. Once it pays back the loans, Chrysler can strengthen its ties to Fiat, its Italian partner, and begin adding more fuel-efficient cars to its truck-heavy lineup, the Times said. Although details of the debt offering, to be led by Goldman Sachs, are still being negotiated, Chrysler intends to use the proceeds of the sale to help it pay off all of the government loans, according to people familiar with Chrysler's plans, the Times said. "They are making progress both in the product area and the financial area," said Dennis Virag, president of the Automotive Consulting Group in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Times article said.

Avenger rally car marks Mopar parts deal, Detroit News, April 28
o Turning a Dodge Avenger into a rally car? That's precisely what Chrysler's Mopar team has done to showcase its new relationship with Magneti Marelli, the well-known aftermarket and motorsports parts supplier based in Milan, Italy, the Detroit News said. Mopar will become the North American distributor of Magneti Marelli parts, so instead of parts exclusively for Chrysler products, it can offer aftermarket equipment for all brands, the News said. To demonstrate some of the possibilities, engineers from Mopar and Magneti Marelli took a 2011 Dodge Avenger Heat and in three weeks transformed it into the Dodge Avenger Rally Car, the article said.

All-new 2011 Dodge Charger R/T AWD Wins New England Motor Press Association Winter Vehicle Award

Snowpocolypse Street Weapon: All-new 2011 Dodge Charger R/T AWD Wins New England Motor Press Association Winter Vehicle Award

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Feb 16, 2011 - Demonstrating its winter-driving prowess, the all-new 2011 Dodge Charger R/T all-wheel drive (AWD) equipped with its segment-exclusive front-axle disconnect and active transfer case AWD system is the winner of the coveted New England Motor Press Association's (NEMPA) 2011 Winter Vehicle Award ? Sedan/Wagon $25,000 to $35,000.

"Dodge Charger is a great looking car with a high-quality interior," said John Paul, Winter Vehicle Awards Team Leader ? NEMPA. "Add in its dedicated all-wheel-drive system, and the Charger feels like it was designed just for New England winters. Oh and by the way, it has a Hemi!"

The New England Motor Press Association is unique among regional motor press groups. Its media members represent all six New England states, reaching one of the largest populations in America. These automotive writers and talk show hosts influence consumers who are in the market to buy cars and trucks to cope with the region's punishing weather conditions.

This February, more than 50 members of NEMPA gathered in Bridgewater, Mass., for the group's annual Winter Vehicle voting day. Vehicles were chosen based on how they met specific driver needs of New England's tough winter driving conditions, especially this season with more than 80 inches of snowfall in Boston alone.

"When designing the all-new Dodge Charger R/T AWD, the team pushed the fastback sedan's capabilities further, delivering a highly capable and precise all-season performance street weapon that thrives in any 'snowpocolypse,'" said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO ? Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "With its state-of-the-art AWD system combined with a new world-class chassis, best-in-class horsepower, the all-new Dodge Charger R/T AWD is designed to deliver performance and grip even during one of the harshest of winters this country has seen in years."

With its iconic character, contemporary fastback four-door coupe proportions, legendary HEMI® V-8 engine with 370 best-in-class horsepower, clever four-cylinder mode Fuel Saver Technology delivering up to 20 percent improved fuel efficiency, the segment's most innovative all-wheel-drive system, world-class performance, craftsmanship and refinement, and state-of-the-art connectivity features, the all-new 2011 Charger R/T AWD is the Dodge brand's flagship, and it proudly delivers premium, world-class E-segment sedan precision at an incredible value.

The all-new 2011 Dodge Charger R/T AWD model features a segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle disconnect system to improve fuel economy by up to 5 percent. No other major automotive manufacturer offers the combination of these two independent technologies. Dodge Charger's innovative AWD system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and AWD with no driver intervention. When all-wheel drive is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding fun-to-drive performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

With its new second-generation E-segment rear-wheel drive (RWD) architecture, Dodge Charger R/T AWD features a world-class suspension-tuning with re-designed geometry making for a nimble, balanced chassis that will build the Charger's legend as one of the best driving sedans in the world. In addition, 19-inch aluminum wheels and a lowered ride height with tighter tire-to-fender fitment make it much more appealing than ever before.

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2011 Dodge Charger R/T AWD is $33,145 (excluding an $825 destination charge) and is now available at Dodge dealerships nationwide.
